NABD16 rally at Astle Park 11th-13th May 2007
The first things to note about NABD 16 were the layout, and the fact that cars were excluded from the main campsite area (except disabled area). This was a positive move in my opinion, and worked very well.
The build up to NABD 16 was an active one, with the ‘yodashire Massive’ making arrangements well in advance of the rally, we based our plans on last year’s layout, of the site, but our plan was foiled but none the less we somehow found each other. After circling the wagons and setting up camp Ernie the dwarf immediately consumed 6 times his body size in alcohol (that was 3 cans then) and was very very drunk before most people had finished unpacking.
Luckily the rain as promised by the weathermen held off till tents were up, and then it let us have it, and as you can guess, all three marquees filled up quickly, I started off in the family tent where 3 Cornered Rug were playing, a punk band with a difference, more entertaining than your usual punk bands, which are attitude and screaming till your ears bleed (oops that the Punk faction after me now). From here I went to the real ale bar under the cover of my poncho, looking like a naked Dalek; and when I asked some young ladies if I could take their photo, and proceeded to fidgeting under my poncho they looked quite worried until I whipped out my camera, and then they looked relived or upset (I am not sure which).
Upon reaching the real ale tent, I found that there was a small problem with the electrics so rather than STEViE playing on stage, he was going from table to table, which added a great personal feel to his set. I must admit that I wanted to see Hotrod 55 a very talented rockabilly band, but decided to listen to them from my tent and start writing this up and I must say that I was gobsmacked, I got no writing done, and one word could possibly describes them: Brilliant! I can’t say any better than that.
I had gone back to me tent to possibly do three things: 1, listen to hotrod 55, 2, Start writing this up and 3, build an Ark as I was sure I would need one by the morning.
Saturday starts off with me being in organised mode, going through the Nabd rally itinerary circling the bands and show I was going to see, and as I left my tent the neatly planned agenda was immediately out the window. Very Bad toad (formerly known as just ‘Bad Toad’) had ripped up three copies of the yellow pages into JonnyFP’s Tent filling it completely, but JonnyFP got his own back, and by the time he reads this Very Bad Toad should know what it is.
After I had spotted the BSH Stealth tent, which I had somehow missed the previous night, Blue was there so I quickly got pulled up my lap tray with seven cameras six notepads, laptop computer, satellite phone, tracking device little hat with ‘Press’ card attached to it. I looked very busy, not that she is a tyrant oh no I would never actually say that (not that I could after she cut my tongue out for answering back to a rhetorical question); so after several convincing moments of busyness I managed to get to the bike show, with the maddest bike in the world award going to a twin turbo V12 bike (soon to be appearing in this magazine). From there it was a visit to see Clann An Drumma a Scottish band with a unique blend of Drums and bagpipes, if you are at a rally, then I would put them down on your must see list. STEViE was up next but this time he had ‘Special’ Guests womble lancs accompanied him on the violin to whisky in the jar, and JonnyFP joined in on guitar to Copperhead Road. Hotrod 55 were on again, and the marquee was heaving, followed by the jalapenos another energetic rock n roll band.
Nabd rallies can never be labelled as boring or repetitive. If you cannot find something the keep you entertained at a Nabd rally, then you must be either very boring or dead, the amount and variety of entertainment is huge. It is well organised, and dare I say professional? (Yes Grav even you)
The main credit goes to all those volunteers that not only work tirelessly putting on rallies, but also on running NABD, selflessly helping others with little recognition, they are the true heroes. And I for one really do thank you all for that.
